How to change the DNS for your domain to point to your hosting company's servers.

Your hosting provider should have given you the primary and secondary DNS information. This information will usually take this form:

Primary Hostname- ns1.examplehostname.com
Primary IP- 123.45.67.8
Secondary Hostname- ns2.examplehostname.com
Secondary IP- 123.45.67.9

You can log on to our website at www.myDiscountDomains.com, and click on "Domain Manager".  Log in by entering the username and password you chose at the time of registration. If you have forgotten the username and password you chose, you may enter the email address you entered at the time of registration to have your username and password emailed to you.  After you log in, you will see links to the actions you can perform. Click the "Change DNS Info" link. You will be able to see the current name server info listed. Select the domain(s) whose hosting you wish to alter, and click the "Continue" button.  On the next screen, you will be able to enter the hosting information your host has given to you. Replace the current servers with the new server info (you may omit the IP addresses, as they are optional), and click the "Continue" button. Your new DNS information will be automatically entered, if it is verified to be valid.
It will take a couple of days (24 - 48 hours) for your change to propagate Internet-wide.

Definition of DNS

DNS (Domain Name System) is a system that translates a domain name from letters (www.myDiscountDomains.com) into a numerical IP address (NS1.myDiscountDomains.COM 63.85.86.14).
Each time you register a domain name you must specify your DNS (Domain Name Server) )information. If you register a domain name through myDiscountDomains.com, you can use our DNS information free of charge! This is known in the industry as "parking" a domain- parking is free using myDiscountDomains.com's servers. You can change the DNS information at any time, also free of charge, but be aware, your new DNS host may charge you a parking fee...

When and Why you would need to change your DNS information.

If you have a new web site or email account, your web hosting company or ISP will ask you to change your DNS information (typically, they would become the new DNS host) so that your domain name can be connected to your web site and your email account can be setup.

How to change the DNS information for your Domain Name,

DNS information is provided by your host. It consists of a primary AND a secondary nameserver. You must have BOTH nameservers. The definition of a secondary nameserver is NOT that it gets its information from the primary nameserver, it is its own unique IP address. Both the primary and secondary nameserver "point" the domain that resolves to the IP that the host creates. A name will resolve 50/50- 50% of the time to the primary and 50% of the time to the secondary. Therefore, you cannot specify one of your h o s t i n g servers and one of ours.

The DNS services we offer are:

1. Free parking- if you don't have a website, but still want a domain, you can "park" it on our servers for free without having to pay someone for hosting.
2. Free DNS changes- log on to our website at any time and change the primary and secondary DNS info. The simple translation is that you can either use our servers for parking only, or you can use our control panel to set up your domain to resolve at your host's servers. You can't mix and match those two options.

If all you have is the IP address of your hosting server, then you must use URL-forwarding. URL-forwarding will resolve any hits on your domain to our forwarding servers, and then call up the IP or web address you specify.
If you are changing DNS information on a domain name you registered with myDiscountDomains.com, begin by clicking the "Domain Manager" on the home page. You will be asked for the username and password that you designated at the time you set up your domain account. If you have forgotten your username and password, you can have it emailed to the email address you have on your account. Choose the domain you wish to alter from your list of domains. Then, click the "Edit DNS" for the domain you want to change. Input the primary and secondary (and, if necessary, the tertiary) hostnames. Our system will automatically resolve the IP addresses of a valid name server.

What to do with your domain name, now that you have registered it.

There are many things you can do with your new  domain. Some people want to build a website for their corporate or personal use. If that is the case, you must contact a web design/ h o s t i n g company. Once they have a website ready for you, we can "point" your new domain to that website.
Some want custom email, (you@your-new-domain.com, for example). You can enable our email forwarding feature to forward your mail to your primary email account auch as johnsmith@aol.com.  Some just want to resell their domain name. In that case, you may certainly sell your new domain to whomever you like. Simply contact us to transfer the domain name to your buyer.

Changing the hosting for your domain

You have several options to change the hosting of your domain.  The first option is the most direct. You can contact your host, and obtain your new host's DNS (Domain Name Server) Information. Once you have their DNS info, you can return to the myDiscountDomains website and update your DNS records online, gaining access to our Domain Manager with your username and password. Click on Edit DNS Info, for the domain you wish to change the hosting for, and enter your new DNS information, and save your changes.

Some hosts, though, will not allow unique domains to point to your site. In that case, you'll need the second option. That is our URL-forwarding service. URL-forwarding is a function of the management control panel. Access the Domain Manager section with your username and password, and select the URL-forwarding link. Banner-free forwarding to the URL of your choice is free for each domain you register with myDiscountDomains.com.
You can use a www URL- http : //www.yourcompany.com/yourexamplesite.html, or a host URL- http : //12.34.56.789.  Both options will take 24-48 hours to take effect.

How to change the DNS for your domain to point to your hosting company's servers.
When you register your domain, default DNS (Domain Nameservers) settings are used. Your web hosting provider can give you their primary and secondary DNS information and you can change the default settings to those of your web host. The DNS information usually looks something like this:

Primary IP- 123.45.67.8
Secondary Hostname- ns2.examplehostname.com
Secondary IP- 123.45.67.9

You can log on to our website at www.myDiscountDomains.com, and click on "Domain Manager".  Log in by entering the username and password you chose at the time of registration. If you have forgotten the username and password you chose, you may enter the email address you entered at the time of registration to have your username and password emailed to you.
  1. Beside the domain whose DNS you want to change, click DNS.
  2. Replace the current servers with the new server information provided by your web hosting company (you may omit the IP addresses, as they are optional).

URL Forwarding and DNS

URL-forwarding is available as a service from myDiscountDomains. URL-forwarding is a function of the management control panel.  Click on the Domain Manager link and login with your username and password, and select the URL-forwarding link.  Banner-free URL forwarding is free with registration at myDiscountDomains.com.   It allows you to redirect visitors to another website (that you own) when they type your domain name in the browser address field.

You can use a www URL- http : //www.yourcompany.com/yourexamplesite.html, or a host URL- http : //12.34.56.789.
To set up domain forwarding
  1. Go to Mydiscountdomains.com, Click Domain Manager, and log in to your account.
  2. Beside the domain that you want to redirect, click Domain Forwarding.
  3. In the URL field, enter the address of the destination website.
You can specify the URL, for example, http://www.yourcompany.com/yourexamplesite.html, or you can specify the IP address, for example, http://12.34.56.789.
  4. Click Enabled to implement domain forwarding.
  5. If you do not want your website address to appear in the browser address field, select Masked from the drop-down list. When visitors type your domain name in the browser address field, they are sent to your website, but they still see your domain name in the address field. If you do want the website address (the destination) to be displayed in the address field, ensure that  Masked is not selected.
  6. Optionally, in the Title field, enter the text that you want to appear in the browser title bar.
  7. Optionally, in the Description field, enter a short description of your website.
  8. Optionally, in the Keywords field, enter some descriptive words that a visitor might use when searching for your website. Separate each word or phrase with a comma.
  9. Click Save.
Please allow 24 to 48 hours for your change to propagate throughout the Internet. Your domain will be hosted on our servers, and will pull up the web page you specify.  You can choose 'Masked' to have your domain name in the address bar of the browser window at all times, and your "real" web address will be hidden or unmasked if you want the website address to be hidden.   You may change your forwarding destination at any time through the management control panel. Simply log back in to the Enable URL-forwarding section, and update your web address. Click the Enable URL-forwarding to update the address.
Email Forwarding and DNS

Email forwarding is available as a service of myDiscountDomains. You can have "anymailrecipient @ yourdomain.com" mail forwarded to any existing email address.  When you sign up for email forwarding you will get your own personalized email with up to 10 different Emails per domain.   To activate email forwarding, Click on the Domain Manager link and log in with your username and password. If you have forgotten your username and password, enter the email address you used at the time of registration, and we will email you your username and password.  Once you've logged on, click the Enable Email Forwarding link. Select what email address you'd like to set up for your domain, as well as the email address you'd like to forward that email to. If your real email address changes, no problem. Just return to the Control Panel and the email forwarding section and update your email address.  Email forwarding is free with registration at myDiscountDomains.com.  It will take 24-48 hours for your email to begin forwarding.
